Okay, I confess: I have a stack of wrinkled-up pictures of Ikara Colt bassist Tracey under my bed for evenings when the girlfriend’s away*. I’m not proud, but please, put that admission to one side for just one second and read this: this song is really good. No, really, it is. I know you’ve got the excellent album of a similar name and that you’ve heard this song already and you’ve seen the band three times in the last three months and they played it every time but STOP. Please. What’s the best way to earn a buck from an existing customer? Alter the product of course. Or, in this case, release a remix.
Given the once-over by Niklas Flyckt, also responsible for Rachel Stevens’ ‘LA Ex’ and Britney’s single of the year (I ain’t even shittin’ you) ‘Toxic’, ‘Modern Feeling’ comes on like Now That’s What I Call Miserable Indie Rock 1982 fast-forwarded through time Buck Rogers style. It’s so slick you could catch cormorants in it. It struts like a catwalk model and pouts like Leslie Ash. It’s moodier than David Beckham when Posh packs him off to bed without dinner for not wiping his bottom properly.
Long story short: listening to this is more a gratifying experience than leafing through a ragged pile of cutouts from the pages of the indie-rock press. Plus, you can always wipe a CD clean again…

I’ve always had a thing for art-rock. I love listening to it and being bombared with synth distortion, meaningful lyrics and beats that you just can’t help but dance to. Ikara Colt have been the babes of the genre for a while now but haven’t yet managed to get that one song that sends them skywards. But will they be able to do it with “Modern Feeling”, their disco loving, funk wonder?
It’s got it all. It has everything that their more successful counterparts like Franz Ferdinand have to offer but with a darker and more rock ‘n’ roll edge. It leaves a very pleasant aftertaste in the ears thanks to its guitar wank-less, harmonious, synth-ridden sound and is a great proper introduction to a band who everyone should know. “That modern feeling will get you in the end” they sing…well it’s certainly got me. Still Ikara Colt plug on. Still the plonker public ignores them in favour of the countless Others that are smeared under one’s shoes in every gutter at the minute. ‘Modern Feeling’ is a proper cracker of a snotty pop thing; Claire and Paul snidely harmonising over Teutonic claps and strident, electronically tinged riffs. It’s a furtherance of the direction Ikara Colt hinted at with the ‘Basic Instructions’ EP, and the way we dearly hope they keep going. Their time is long, long overdue. (luke turner)
